In 1962 “Tony Lip” Vallelonga (Mortensen) is an out of work tough Italian-American Night Club bouncer who reluctantly accepts a job driving an African-American Concert Pianist Dr Don Shirley (Ali) on a 8 week concert tour in the Deep South. The journey begins armed with a copy of “The Negro Motorist Green Book” a travel guide to safe travel through the racially segregated Southern States. We follow the developing relationship between an uneducated, tough, streetwise white man serving a well-educated and talented African American. They have to get over their differences and survive the dangers in an era of segregation and racism ultimately coming to an understanding that changes both their lives. Both men died within 3 months of each other in 2013 after 50 years of friendship.
